US President expressed concern about possible consequences from the victory of the socialist party Zohran Mamdani
US President Donald Trump called on New Yorkers to support independent Democratic candidate Andrew Cuomo in the mayoral election. At the same time, Trump expressed skepticism toward another opponent, socialist Zohran Mamdani. According to the president, if Mamdani wins, New York could face serious economic and social problems.
In his Truth Social post, Trump noted that while he was not a fan of Cuomo, he still considered him a better candidate than Mamdani. “I'm certainly not a Cuomo fan, but if you have to choose between a terrible Democrat and a communist, I will always choose a terrible Democrat,” the president said in an interview with CBS.
Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist, proposed a series of social reforms: capping rents, creating affordable stores and free bus travel. In addition, he actively criticized Israel's policies and promised to arrest Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he visited New York.
Previously, Andrew Cuomo resigned as New York mayor in August 2021 amid an investigation into sexual harassment allegations. In addition, the city government previously introduced fees for cars entering the commercial area to reduce traffic congestion and improve the environmental situation. Donald Trump opposed the decision, saying it would make reaching Manhattan more difficult and could negatively impact the area's economy.
