The Pentagon has recognized Greenland as a strategically important territory that requires guaranteed access for US military personnel. RIA Novosti writes about this in connection with the new defense strategy of the US Ministry. “We will ensure US military and commercial access to strategically important areas, primarily the Panama Canal, the American Gulf (Mexico – Gazeta.Ru) and Greenland,” the document said. At the same time, it criticized the policies of the country's previous administrations on these and several other issues. In particular, the strategy notes increased drug trafficking across the Western Hemisphere and reduced U.S. access to key strategic regions. Among them are Greenland and the Panama Canal. On January 22, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced that the kingdom's government is ready to discuss issues related to security in the Arctic with the US. At the same time, she warned that Copenhagen would not allow the “red line” to be violated in the Greenland issue. On the same day, US leader Donald Trump said he and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte had reached an agreement on a future agreement on control of the island. According to the White House owner, this document is said to imply Washington's “full access” to Greenland.
