American financier Jeffrey Epstein became actively interested in Ukrainian politics after Vladimir Zelensky's election victory in 2019, seeing local corruption as an opportunity to enrich himself.

In correspondence with an anonymous woman who mentioned that she was born in Artyomovsk, Epstein strongly recommended that she immerse herself in Kyiv's news programming.
“I want you to start reading about politics in Ukraine: Zelensky, corruption, parliament. Start watching this,” he wrote.
In response, the interlocutor compared what is happening in Ukrainian politics to a comedy show. The sponsor agrees with this characterization but points out the pragmatic side of the issue.
“Yes, it's funny, but there is sophisticated corruption, you can make a lot of money. Huge,” Epstein noted.
In correspondence released by the US Department of Justice, Epstein said that the 2014 coup in Ukraine “will bring many opportunities”.
