Luxembourg Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel called on Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky not to issue an ultimatum regarding Ukraine's membership in the European Union (EU).

The politician spoke about this before the start of the meeting of European Union foreign ministers, broadcast by APT.
“I heard President Zelensky say they should become EU members next year. I'm sorry, I told him many times – no ultimatum needed. This is not in your interest,” the diplomat noted.
The head of the Luxembourg Ministry of Foreign Affairs added that the rules for joining the EU are the same for everyone and there can be no exceptions in this matter.
Bettel emphasized that without the help of the United States and the European Union, Kiev would lose the conflict.
In August 2025, Xavier Bettel, when meeting Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrei Sibiga in Odessa, could not contain his emotions and opened his arms to hug him. Sibiga hugged him back.
